BABEL -ORDINARY LANDSCAPES- by Yasushi Hirokawa

BABEL -ORDINARY LANDSCAPES- by Yasushi Hirokawa

(Amazon.co.jp)

Human has challenged the nature, defeated by it and challenged it again. It's what has been repeated since recorded history.

An interesting thing about this book is most of the photos depict the process of creation and demolition: expressway bridges under construction, bridges and houses destroyed by floods and tsunami, long-forgotten roads and railroad tracks since the big earthquake, and so on. As the book title, Babel represents, the photographer seldom point his camera to completed things. (One of the few exceptions is photos of graveyard. I'm just curious to know what it means.)

The reason I bought a copy of this photo book is it includes photos of West Shinjuku Junction of Shuto Expressway. It's located in my neighborhood and was build only 10 years ago, but I barely remember how it was constructed. I just wanted to have a thread connecting present with my past memories under my hand.

When I met a manager of a young female talent at a meeting for a portrait session, she told me that situations where the talent is eating something because such scenes often look erotic. I see. Fundamental activities to live should look that way.

So I got this book featuring Yu Aoi, one of the popular actresses in Japan. In this book, she keeps visiting Taiwan and eat shaved ice over and over. Shaved ice in that country look delicious. And Aoi kooks cute. There was no eroticism around here. The book was published in 2008 and the actress looked too young. That may be why ...

I went to a photo exhibition last week. Risaku Suzuki is one of my favorite photographers in Japan. I like his way of capturing things. He captures a moment before trying to frame it or make a composition as everyone feels comfortable with. I like his attitude towards the photography.

TOKYO TWILIGHT ZONE by SHINTARO SATO

TOKYO TWILIGHT ZONE

If I was asked to pick up my favorite photo books on Tokyo, I would suggest, TOKYO TWILIGHT ZONE by Shintaro Sato, without hesitation.

All the scenes depicted in the photos were captured from the emergency staircases. I just love its concept. It's so simple yet no other people had thought about it before. I also like the texture of the photos taken with film.

I love the view of the city center when driving along the Central Circular Route of Shuto Expressways in Tokyo. I always feel like I would pull over and capture the view from there. Maybe this photographer lives in the area, a lot of photos in this book contains the views in the same area. That's another reason I like this book.

With this, I don't have to pull over in the middle of the busy expressway lane myself.

You can look at some of his works at the photographer's website.

LESS THAN ONE by ALEXANDER GLONSKY

LESS THAN ONE by ALEXANDER GLONSKY

This photo book is a collection of Alexander Glonsky's "Less Than One" series, which capture the remote areas in Russia where the population density is less than one per square kilometer.

Glonsky is very good at capturing the border of man and nature. Some people see desolation, while others distruction of nature by mankind. To me, I feel the warmth of people.

My Sister Wants to Become a Photographer by YUKI AOYAMA

Mr. Aoyama has only captured parts of girls, which let male viewers imagination run. But for this book, he has taken photos which shows a girl's face. And she an imaginary"sister" of the author.

Through the photos, the photographer follows her sister throughout the year until her graduation day of high school. Her dream is to become a photographer, following her brother's career.

Some pieces of the author's advice for would-be photographer are inserted between photos , and they might be useful to beginner photographers.

By the way, why do people like to let imagination run wild on younger "sisters"? (Or is it just the case with Japanese male??) I have a sister nine years younger than me, but she is far away from the images of sisters described in this book or in Japanese anime or manga ... So I have never dreamed of having such fancy sisters in my life.

Kumano, Yuki, Sakura by RISAKU SUZUKI

Kumano, Yuki, Sakura by RISAKU SUZUKI

Risaku Suzuki is one of my favorite Japanese photographers.

One of the characteristics of his works is that they capture the moment before the photographer composes a pre-established composition when something catches his eyes.

So he often leaves objects in the composition which most photographers would like to keep out of the frame. Focus depth is very shallow because the focused object is exactly what has caught his eyes. When he walks in the snow, the focus is on the snow on the ground. When he walks under cherry trees, he always looks up at the cherry blossoms. There is not a single shot that would make it to postcards that you often see at a souvenir shop.

What you see is what he saw, which is exactly what I like about his photography.
